How Do You Say Less?

There’s this terrible feeling that grips me any time there’s a global tragedy – “I have to say something about this. Online.” It’s almost defensive, as if failure to share my take constitutes the complicity of silence. And that’s a real thing. Or at least, it can be.

For so long, it was, “Liberal except Palestine,” and I never bothered to do the research to determine my position. But who cares about my position? I’m not an expert. The only thing I can contribute is an opinion – and that’s pollution. I know it’s histrionic to say, but at some point, we have to talk about what we’re doing when we share opinions online. Are we actually trying to help, or is it a selfish act of easing one’s own burdens?
